Creed Pt 6 – The Triumph of the Cross

We are in the middle of a series that I’ve entitled Creed

In this series I want to take a look at the foundational beliefs of the Christian faith

If you were to ask 10 different people what it meant to be a Christian you would likely get 10 different answers

For some, unless you believe exactly like they do, read the same translation of the Bible as they do, vote like they do, talk like they do, and dress like they do then you are going straight to hell

That’s kind of sad

I want to make it clear, though, that not all beliefs are equal

There are some that are flat out wrong

There are others that are just different

The Bible gives us a lot of “wiggle room” in some areas

I’ve seen many times in which two people can read the exact same passage of Scripture and get two totally different things out of it

For example, our topic today is one that can cause great contention within the Church as a whole

The topic today is, basically, what do we do with the Old Covenant rules and regulations?

There are those who believe we are still obligated to follow these rules and regulations to the letter

There are those who believe that the entire Old Testament is irrelevant to us today

My personal opinion is that both of these extremes are wrong

Most Christians fall somewhere in between

The problem with these “in between” Christians is that they tend to pick and choose which portions of the Old Covenant Law they want to follow and which ones they don’t

Most of the time there is little rhyme or reason behind their decision and they tend to choose those Old Covenant laws they follow based on their personal feelings and beliefs

For example, it’s okay to eat shrimp and bacon but don’t you dare cut your grass on Sunday

Again, this is an area where many people see things differently, yet in the end we can still call each other brother and sister in Christ

But what are the non-negotiables?

What does someone have to believe in order to be a Christian?

That is what this series is all about

When thinking about the non-negotiables of the Christian faith I was drawn to the creeds

Specifically to the Nicene Creed, which is what this series is based on

In my opinion the Nicene Creed covers the foundational beliefs, the non-negotiables, of the Christian faith very well

Let’s read the Nicene creed together

We believe in one God,

the Father, the Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,

the only Son of God,

eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

of one Being with the Father.

Through him all things were made.

For us and for our salvation

he came down from heaven:

by the power of the Holy Spirit

he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,

and was made man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,

and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son.

With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead,

and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

So far we’ve looked at the first four parts of the Creed

The first dealing with the existence of God and the second dealing with the fact that Jesus really did exist and that He is God

The third part, which explored the fact that Jesus was both fully God and fully man. That when Jesus came to earth He willingly laid aside His deity and lived life on this earth as a man. That Jesus did all the miracles He did through the power of the Holy Spirit

We then spoke about Jesus’ death and resurrection on the cross

About how Jesus’ shed blood purchased the price for our redemption

If you missed those messages you can grab a CD in the back or go online and take a listen

Today I want to take a look at something else in the fourth section of the creed

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;

he suffered death and was buried.

On the third day he rose again

in accordance with the Scriptures;

he ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

As I mentioned we’ve already talked about the main thing Jesus did on the cross, namely pay the penalty for our sins

However there was something else that happened on the cross as well that is important for us as Christians to understand

I’m going to be upfront with you on this – we’re going to be doing a lot of jumping around the Bible and “connecting the dots” so to speak with Bible verses and theological concepts

We’re also not going to take an exhaustive look at the Scriptures because that would literally take hours

What I’ve done is take what I believe are the best examples from Scripture to bring across the point of this message

I also want to let you know that there are many believers that would disagree with me

I feel the need to teach on this specific topic to make things clear as I understand them

However, this is not a non-negotiable

You may have a differing opinion, and although I think you would be very wrong, I do not think it will affect your salvation in any way

So, as we begin our look at what Jesus accomplished on the cross I want to take a look at the final words Jesus spoke on the cross

John 19:28-30 Later, knowing that all was now completed, and so that the Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty." 29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips. 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Jesus’ last words were “it is finished”

What is finished?

What did Jesus mean by that?

One obvious meaning was that His suffering was finished

He had accomplished His goal of redeeming the world

The mission of redemption was finished

But there was one more thing that was finished as well

What is that?

Jesus gave us this answer

During the Sermon on the Mount Jesus makes this statement

Matthew 5:17-18 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.

When Jesus said “the Law and the Prophets” he was referring to the Hebrew Scriptures - what we would call the Old Testament

Why would Jesus say something like this?

All throughout His earthly ministry we see Jesus challenging the Pharisees and Sadducees

He is constantly saying things like “you have heard it said … but I say”

Jesus is also healing people on the Sabbath and doing other things that might make someone think that He was trying to do away with the Law

Jesus was clarifying that He did not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it

He stated that nothing would be removed from the Law until “everything is accomplished”

This is what Jesus meant on the cross when He said “it is finished”

Jesus had fulfilled the Law

He had accomplished everything in the Law – it was finished

To us this would not be that big of a deal

But this was a huge game changer for first century Christians

So what all do I mean when I say that Jesus fulfilled or finished the Law?

To answer that question we have to go all the way back to Genesis, the first book of the Bible

In Genesis God makes a covenant with Abraham and his descendants

God’s covenant with Abraham was that Abraham would be the father of many nations

That through Abraham God would raise up a chosen people that would live in a land of promise

God also stated that through Abraham all the nations of the world would be blessed

If you read the story of God establishing this covenant with Abraham in Genesis 15

One of the things you will notice is that this covenant was established through the shedding of sacrificial blood

This is very normal in the ancient rites of covenant

In fact, in the ancient covenant the only way it can legally be broken is through the death of one or both of the covenant makers

We know that in time Abraham had a son in his old age that he named Isaac

Isaac had two sons, one of whom was named Jacob

Jacob, whose name was later changed to Israel, had 12 sons, which are the 12 tribes of the nation of Israel

Israel eventually found itself as slaves in the nation of Egypt

Because of the covenant that God had made with Abraham God sent Moses to lead Israel out of Egypt

After Israel left Egypt God led them to Mount Sinai where God gave to Moses the Law

This Law was 613 rules and regulations for Israel to follow

Moses gave this Law to Israel – let’s take a look at what happened

Exodus 24:3-8 When Moses went and told the people all the Lord's words and laws, they responded with one voice, "Everything the Lord has said we will do." Moses then wrote down everything the Lord had said. He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel. Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings to the Lord. Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he sprinkled on the altar. Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, "We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey." Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, "This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words."

So the Law was added to the covenant that God gave Abraham, and it was done through the shedding of blood

Through blood, the old covenant – the thing that Jesus fulfilled - was established

It was also through blood that the New Covenant was established

Let’s take a look at a very similar passage to our Exodus passage

It’s taking place in the Gospel of Luke during what we have come to know as the Last Supper

Luke 22:19-20 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." 20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

When Jesus died on the cross His blood fulfilled the Old Covenant and established the New Covenant

Which brings me to the next obvious question – why did Jesus have to do this?

Acts 13:38-39 "Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. 39 Through him everyone who believes is justified from everything you could not be justified from by the law of Moses.

The Law could not redeem us – it could not make us righteous

In fact, the Apostle Paul tells us in Galatians

Galatians 2:16 know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

Paul also says in Galatians

Galatians 2:21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"

If following the Law could bring us into a right relationship with God, then Jesus would not have had to die

But it couldn’t, that is why Jesus came to fulfill the Law and redeem us

So, if we cannot be redeemed by the Law, why did God give the Law?

Romans 3:20 Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

Romans 7:7 What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "Do not covet."

Galatians 3:24-25 So the law was put in charge to lead us to Christ that we might be justified by faith. 25 Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law.

God gave us the Law to make us aware of sin

God gave us the Law to lead us to Jesus

The Law was all about trying to obtain righteousness by following a list of rules and regulations

God wanted to show us through the Law that this was impossible

Why did God do this?

Because God knows us

As our creator God knows that our nature is to lean towards legalism – rules and regulations

He had to show us by letting us live it out – we cannot get into a right relationship with God by following a list of rules and regulations

When we fail to follow the rules, which is inevitable – at some point we will break them – we will naturally feel like we are not good enough

We will feel condemned – but Scripture says that we shouldn’t

Romans 8:1-4 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the sinful nature, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful man to be a sin offering. And so he condemned sin in sinful man, in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the sinful nature but according to the Spirit.

One other side note - God stated through the prophet Jeremiah in Jeremiah 31 that He would make a New Covenant with Israel

The author of Hebrews calls this a “better covenant” and in Hebrews 8 specifically states that when this new covenant came that it made the old covenant - the covenant made with Abraham - obsolete

So, what does all this mean for us?

What are we to get out of all of this today?

The first thing to realize is that as followers of Jesus we are under no obligation to the Law

Romans 7:4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God.

Romans 7:6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.

All of the rules and regulations in the Old Covenant do not apply to us under the New Covenant

Some of these Old Testament laws are echoed in the New Testament, in which case we are obligated, but if it only appears in the Old Testament we are under no obligation

The second, and most important, thing you need to know is that when it comes to getting right with God it is about the relationship, not the rules

{explain}

One final thing before I close

I am not saying that the Old Testament is irrelevant - far from it!

There is much in the Old Testament that is very relevant for us today

I am saying that as New Covenant believers we are under no obligation to follow Old Covenant law

We live under grace, not law

Romans 10:4 Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.
